Heavy is the Sword is a tactical rogue-like developed with the theme "Everything Has A Cost" for the Yogscast Games - Jingle Game Jam 2024

You are a band of well-respected heroes, travelling across the kingdom. But your favor needs to be maintained. Neglect the nobilities wishes one too many times, and you might become branded a traitor. Abandon the commoners to the claws of the rampaging demons, and they might rise up against you.

You can't make everyone happy, so chose your path wisely. Acquire new abilities along the way and enhance your existing ones to survive to the end!

Play in Full Screen for the best experience!

If you like this entry, I strongly suggest you also go give my entry, which recently won the Safe in Our World - Game Dev Champions jam, a go. It is a wildly different game, but definitely worth a try.

Where your assets comes from ? Look very similar to https://store.steampowered.com/app/2896220/Heros_Warband/

The character sprites are from https://lyaseek.itch.io/. They have a neat collection of really cute characters.

Thanks a lot !

Really fun game. Great take on a classic concept.

Only suggestion would be to re-word the tutorial popups as they dont need that much description as the game is designed well enough to pick up without any more than a prompt or two. My other critique would be to "tone down" the idle animation's as they are a little intense.

Overall, an incredible effort. Well played!

Thanks! I’ve been burnt one too many times by people not understanding how to play games I felt were self-explanatory, so I went with the “better safe than sorry”-approach :)

Chop, chop squad! Let's charge, boiz!

Very impressive submission! I'd have loved to see the different maps and a way to replace the characters at the start of the rounds so that the poor npcs don't get slaughtered before I can reach them. Apart from that, it looks really good, there's fun way to strategise, and definitely has potential to become an awesome post-jam game!

Thanks! Those are both very much on the list of features to implement in the future if I find the time and resources to keep working on the game, as well as smaller maps in general to make positioning early on a little more impactful. Thanks for the feedback :)

Fun! I don't think I'll do another run, it didn't seem like there was quite enough depth for that, but it was very enjoyable. Felt inspired by Into The Breach, which isn't a bad thing :3

Into the Breach was definitely one of my inspirations. If you enjoy those types of games, I can warmly recommend “Tactical Breach Wizards” which was actually the main inspiration for this entry.

Beautiful game, lovely polish!

This was excellent! Well done!

AAA game! To be honest I am amazed how many features the game has and I was hooked. I love the pixel art and mechanics of the game. Masterpiece!

A victory screen after slaying the demon lord with positive favor in every area would be nice. I finished with 1 Nobility favor, 14 Common folk favor, and 11 Adventurer's Guild favor (and 23 gold)

woah! this is so impressive!
